-에 불과하다 — nothing more than

2 examples

-에 불과하다 is used to reduce something to a limited level. It means “nothing more than”, “merely”, or “only”. The expression is formal and often appears in writing, reports, news, academic discussion, and serious speech.

The structure is usually noun + 에 불과하다. The word 불과하다 means that something does not go beyond a certain level. So when you say 그것은 변명에 불과하다, you are not simply saying “that is an excuse.” You are saying “that is nothing more than an excuse.” The sentence cuts down the value or weight of the thing being discussed.

This pattern is useful when you want to reject exaggeration. If someone treats a small result as a major achievement, you can say it is only a beginning. If someone gives an explanation that sounds weak, you can say it is merely an excuse. The tone is analytical and sometimes critical.

Compared with casual 그냥, -에 불과하다 is much more formal and sharper. 그냥 변명이에요 sounds conversational. 변명에 불과합니다 sounds like a firm evaluation.

-에 지나지 않다 — merely, no more than

2 examples

-에 지나지 않다 is very close to -에 불과하다. It means that something does not pass beyond a certain level. The verb 지나다 means “to pass”, so 지나지 않다 literally means “does not go beyond.”

The structure is noun + 에 지나지 않다. It is used to say that something is merely X, no more than X, or only X. For example, 그 말은 추측에 지나지 않는다 means “that statement is nothing more than speculation.”

The difference from -에 불과하다 is subtle. Both reduce the value of something. -에 불과하다 can sound slightly more evaluative and formal. -에 지나지 않다 often feels like a logical limitation: the thing does not exceed the boundary of X.

This pattern appears often in essays, criticism, formal explanation, and analytical writing. It is useful when you want to sound precise rather than emotional.

-에 다름 아니다 — none other than

2 examples

-에 다름 아니다 is used to strongly identify something as exactly X. The word 다름 comes from 다르다, meaning “difference.” So the expression literally says that something is “not different from X.” In natural meaning, it becomes “it is none other than X.”

The structure is noun + 에 다름 아니다. It is formal and emphatic. It often appears in speeches, essays, news commentary, and serious writing. The speaker uses it not merely to describe, but to reveal the true nature or real meaning of something.

For example, 교육은 미래에 대한 투자에 다름 아니다 means “education is none other than an investment in the future.” The sentence does more than define education. It argues for how education should be understood.

This pattern is close to 바로 ...이다, but more formal and heavier. 바로 투자입니다 is clear and direct. 투자에 다름 아닙니다 sounds more rhetorical, suitable for formal persuasion.

-임에 틀림없다 — must be, there is no doubt that

2 examples

-임에 틀림없다 expresses strong certainty. It means “there is no doubt that it is...” or “it must be...” The word 틀림 comes from 틀리다, meaning “to be wrong.” 틀림없다 literally means “there is no wrongness / no error.”

The structure is noun + 임에 틀림없다. For a clause, Korean often uses a nominalized form such as -는 것임에 틀림없다 or a simpler spoken pattern like -는 게 틀림없다. In this lesson, focus first on the formal noun-based structure.

This expression is stronger than 것 같다, which means “seems”. It is also more formal than casual 분명히 ...일 거예요. When you say 그는 전문가임에 틀림없다, you are making a confident judgement based on evidence.

Because the expression is formal, it fits essays, reports, presentations, and serious evaluation. In everyday speech, people often use 틀림없어요 or 분명해요, but the full -임에 틀림없습니다 sounds polished and written.

-는 것이 분명하다 — it is clear that

2 examples

-는 것이 분명하다 expresses that something is clear or evident. 분명하다 means “clear, obvious, definite.” This pattern is used when the speaker wants to present a conclusion as strongly supported by evidence.

The structure is verb stem + -는 것이 분명하다 for present actions or facts. In speech, 것이 often becomes , as in 문제가 있는 게 분명해요. In formal writing, -는 것이 분명하다 sounds more polished.

This pattern is different from -임에 틀림없다. Both express certainty, but 틀림없다 emphasizes that there is no error in the judgement. 분명하다 emphasizes clarity and evidence. If something can be seen from the data, behavior, or situation, 분명하다 is very natural.

It is common in reports, academic writing, news analysis, and workplace explanation. For example, 자료를 보면 변화가 일어나고 있는 것이 분명하다 means “looking at the data, it is clear that change is taking place.”
