-에 따라 — according to, depending on

2 examples

-에 따라 is used when something changes, differs, or is decided according to another factor. It can mean “according to”, “depending on”, or “in accordance with”. The noun before 에 따라 is the standard, condition, rule, or variable that affects the result.

The structure is noun + 에 따라. For example, 상황에 따라 결정하겠습니다 means “I will decide depending on the situation.” The decision is not fixed in advance; it will change according to the situation.

This pattern is common in formal Korean because it lets the speaker explain variation in a clear and objective way. Prices can differ according to region, methods can change according to conditions, and results can vary according to effort.

In daily speech, people also use it often, but in reports, notices, academic writing, and workplace Korean, it becomes especially useful. It gives the sentence a structured and analytical tone.

-에 따라서 — according to, with stronger linkage

2 examples

-에 따라서 has the same basic meaning as -에 따라, but it can feel slightly fuller, more explicit, or more formal. The ending gives the phrase a stronger connective feeling, as if the following result is directly tied to the preceding condition.

The structure is noun + 에 따라서. In many cases, 에 따라 and 에 따라서 are interchangeable. 날씨에 따라 일정이 바뀔 수 있습니다 and 날씨에 따라서 일정이 바뀔 수 있습니다 both mean that the schedule may change depending on the weather.

The difference is mostly rhythm and register. 에 따라 is compact and often preferred in formal written Korean. 에 따라서 can sound a little more explanatory, especially in speech or teaching.

Advanced learners should focus less on memorizing a strict rule and more on recognizing the style. In reports, both are correct. In natural speech, 에 따라서 often makes the relationship between condition and result sound clearer.

-에 달려 있다 — depend on, be up to

2 examples

-에 달려 있다 means that the result, success, future, or outcome depends on a certain factor. The verb 달리다 here means to be attached or dependent. The expression is stronger than 에 따라 because it says that something important is hanging on that condition.

The structure is noun + 에 달려 있다. For example, 성공은 준비에 달려 있습니다 means “success depends on preparation.” Preparation is not just one factor among many; it is presented as the key factor.

This pattern is common in motivational speech, academic explanation, workplace discussion, and serious advice. It often appears with words like 성공, 결과, 미래, 가능성, 선택, and 노력.

Compare 노력에 따라 결과가 달라집니다 and 결과는 노력에 달려 있습니다. The first says the result changes according to effort. The second says the result depends on effort. The second feels more decisive and weighty.

-와/과 상관없이 — regardless of

2 examples

-와/과 상관없이 means “regardless of” or “irrespective of.” The noun 상관 means relation or relevance. 상관없이 therefore means “without relation to” or “regardless of”.

Use -과 상관없이 after a consonant and -와 상관없이 after a vowel. For example, 나이와 상관없이 누구나 신청할 수 있습니다 means “anyone can apply regardless of age.” Age is removed as a limiting condition.

This pattern is common in rules, public notices, policies, admissions, research descriptions, and formal statements. It is useful when you want to say that a factor does not affect eligibility, judgement, result, or treatment.

Compared with 에 따라, the logic is opposite. 나이에 따라 결과가 달라집니다 means the result differs by age. 나이와 상관없이 결과는 같습니다 means the result is the same regardless of age.

-을/를 막론하고 — regardless of, without distinction

2 examples

-을/를 막론하고 is a formal expression meaning “regardless of” or “without distinction of.” The verb 막론하다 means not to distinguish or not to take something as a dividing factor.

The structure is noun + 을/를 막론하고. It is often used with broad categories such as age, gender, nationality, region, class, religion, and status. For example, 남녀노소를 막론하고 means “regardless of gender or age.”

This pattern is more formal and rhetorical than 상관없이. It appears in speeches, official writing, news, public statements, and essays. It often gives the sentence a broad social or public tone.

Compare 나이와 상관없이 and 나이를 막론하고. Both can mean “regardless of age.” But 나이와 상관없이 is neutral and practical, while 나이를 막론하고 sounds more formal and sweeping, as if addressing a wider public.
