Exemplification and connected speech

Connected speech links function words to surrounding content words through reduction, resyllabification and sound adjustment.

01 · Concept foundation

Understand the terms before applying the rule

Each term below names a different grammatical object. Open examples and compare their function rather than memorising a Vietnamese translation alone.

T01

connected speech/kəˈnektɪd spiːtʃ/

lời nói nối liền

Natural speech in which words influence one another rather than being pronounced as isolated dictionary forms.

a lot of data → /ə ˈlɒtəv ˈdeɪtə/

a lot of data → /ə ˈlɒtəv ˈdeɪtə/

T02

nối âm

The smooth connection between the final sound of one word and the initial sound of the next.

4

Connected-speech grouping, pause placement and attachment

Decision boundary: Choose the discourse function and grammatical complement before choosing an example marker; do not stack such as with for example.

02 · Controlling rule

Such as and including attach examples to a noun phrase; for example and for instance are sentence-level discourse markers; namely specifies an exact set. Like normally expresses resemblance or informal exemplification, whereas as marks role, function or introduces a clause. Spoken grouping and pauses reveal which phrase modifies which element.

Exemplification, resemblance and connected speech

Choose among such as, for example, for instance, including, namely, like and as according to function, complement type, punctuation and register, then preserve these grammatical boundaries in fluent connected speech.

Form–sound modules4Meaning → grammar → sound → register
Scientific decision model

First decide whether you are giving examples, specifying an exhaustive list, expressing resemblance, assigning a role or introducing a clause. Only then choose the expression and punctuation.

These expressions are not interchangeable ornaments. Such as and including usually attach to a noun phrase, whereas for example and for instance can comment on a whole proposition. Namely identifies the intended members more exhaustively.

1

Are the following items examples or the complete identified set?

2

Does the expression introduce a noun phrase, an -ing nominal, or an entire clause?

3

Is the meaning resemblance/example (like) or role/function/clause relation (as)?

4

Does punctuation show whether the phrase is integrated or sentence-level?

Active knowledge module

Such as, for example and for instance

Choose according to grammatical attachment and punctuation, not merely because all can be translated as 'ví dụ như'.

category + such as + NP/list | For example/instance, + clause | clause, for example, ...
RULE 01

Such as directly introduces representative members of a category: coastal measures such as beach nourishment and dune restoration.

RULE 02

For example and for instance operate as sentence adverbials and are commonly set off by commas.

RULE 03

Do not stack markers such as *such as for example; one clear exemplification signal is enough.

RULE 04

A following -ing form can function nominally: activities such as monitoring shoreline change.

Nature-based measures such as dune restoration can reduce wave exposure.

such as /sʌtʃ əz/

Các biện pháp dựa vào tự nhiên như phục hồi cồn cát có thể giảm phơi nhiễm sóng.

Such as attaches to the noun phrase nature-based measures and introduces one representative member.

Some structures can intensify local scour. For example, a poorly placed groyne may redirect the current.

for example /fər ɪɡˈzɑːmpəl/

Một số công trình có thể làm tăng xói cục bộ. Ví dụ, một mỏ hàn đặt không phù hợp có thể đổi hướng dòng chảy.

For example introduces a complete proposition illustrating the previous general claim.

Representative examples

such as /sʌtʃ əz/
category noun + such as + NP/list

Introduces non-exhaustive members of a category.

measures such as nourishment

variables such as salinity and discharge

  • Do not add for example immediately after such as.

Sentence-level illustration

for often weak /fər/
For example/instance, + clause

Introduces a proposition illustrating a previous claim.

For example, the eastern site retreated by 12 m.

  • Use commas or sentence boundaries according to placement.

Exact specification

namely /ˈneɪmli/
delimited set + namely + exact members

Identifies the exact entities already anticipated.

two sites, namely A and B

  • Use when the specification is intended as complete.

Resemblance versus role

as often weak /əz/
like + NP | as + role/clause

Separates resemblance/example from actual function or clausal relation.

looks like noise

works as an engineer

as the report notes

  • Formal writing often maintains this distinction more strictly than casual speech.
Meaning-changing contrasts

Phrase-level versus sentence-level example

measures such as dune restoration

Such as is integrated inside a noun phrase.

For example, dunes can be restored.

For example introduces a whole proposition.

Choose according to grammatical attachment, not stylistic variety alone.

Open list versus exact identification

including Stations 3 and 7

These are included; other stations may also be included.

namely Stations 3 and 7

These are the intended identified stations.

Use namely only when an exact identification is licensed by the preceding context.

Resemblance versus actual role

He works like an engineer.

His manner resembles an engineer's; he may not be one.

He works as an engineer.

Engineer is his actual role.

Vietnamese như can cover both; English requires the intended semantic relation.

Shared function

Both languages use examples, comparisons and role expressions to clarify meaning.

Structural difference

Vietnamese như/ví dụ như can cover several functions that English divides among like, as, such as and for example, each with different complements and punctuation.

Transfer risk

Direct transfer can produce *works like an engineer for an actual job, *such like, *such as for example or comma-splice punctuation.

Operational strategy

Label the function first—example, role, resemblance, exact specification or result—then select the licensed English frame.

When to use it in communication and IELTS

Everyday conversation

Prefer: Use like and for example naturally, but keep category/example boundaries clear.

Avoid: Stacking several example markers or using namely for an open list.

One accurate signal makes the listener's processing easier than several redundant ones.

IELTS Speaking

Prefer: Support general answers with one specific example and natural prosodic separation.

Avoid: Using for example repeatedly at the start of every sentence.

Examples should develop content, not merely display a memorised connector.

IELTS/academic writing

Prefer: Match such as/including to noun phrases and use for example/instance with controlled punctuation.

Avoid: Vague etc., and so on, like informal lists, or claims unsupported by representative evidence.

Academic exemplification must show the relation between general claim and selected evidence.

Build the right example relation

Choose the communicative intention and inspect the grammar, spoken grouping and punctuation.

Guided mastery check

Choose, submit and read the exact feedback

0/4

1. Choose the best phrase for members of a category.

2. Which expression most clearly identifies an exact pair?

3. Choose the sentence meaning that engineer is her real job.

4. Which structure expresses a result rather than examples?

Transfer task

Write a short IELTS-style paragraph containing one general claim, a noun-phrase example with such as, a sentence-level example with for instance, and one exact specification with namely; then record it with clear tone-unit boundaries.

  • I identified whether the list was representative or exhaustive.
  • I matched the marker to a noun phrase or full clause correctly.
  • I distinguished like from as and such as from such that.
  • My punctuation and pauses reflect grammatical scope.

03 · Worked examples

Observe form, function and meaning together

EX01

Coastal measures such as dune restoration can reduce wave exposure.

Các biện pháp ven biển như phục hồi cồn cát có thể giảm phơi nhiễm sóng.

EX02

Several measures can help. For example, dunes can dissipate wave energy.

Một số biện pháp có thể hữu ích. Ví dụ, cồn cát có thể tiêu tán năng lượng sóng.

EX03

Two stations, namely A and B, were excluded.

Hai trạm, cụ thể là A và B, bị loại.

EX04

She works as an engineer but thinks like a scientist.

Cô ấy làm việc với vai trò kỹ sư nhưng tư duy giống một nhà khoa học.

04 · High-risk contrast

Explain why one form fails, not only which answer is correct

Incorrect

Methods such as for example nourishment can help.

Repaired

Methods such as nourishment can help.

Such as already introduces examples, so adding for example duplicates the discourse function.

06 · IELTS Academic

Transfer grammar into a real communicative task

Accurate exemplification develops ideas in Speaking and Task 2 without producing memorised linker chains. Such as is efficient inside noun phrases; for example can introduce a supporting sentence; namely is useful only when the specification is exact. Correct like/as choices prevent role–resemblance confusion. In speech, pause placement should preserve the grammatical attachment.

E1

Explain the grammar–sound relation instead of memorising an isolated spelling rule.

E2

Distinguish the target form from its nearest confusable alternative.

E3

Produce one accurate spoken example and one formal written example.

E4

Hear or infer the reduced form without deleting the required grammar in writing.
